News about Berlin Schönefeld airport
Berlin Schönefeld airport is located adjacent to Berlin’s southern border. Although it is an international airport, its main business is for the holiday trade and it is mostly the cheaper charter flights which use the airport. As the location of Schönefeld airport is outside the city parameters noise pollution is not much of an issue.
In 2011 Schönefeld airport will be transformed into Berlin-Brandenburg international airport. The closure of Tempelhof and Tegel airports will happen around the same time as this, and will affectively merge to become one. In 2006 Schönefeld airport served around 6,059,343 passengers, it is thought that after the conversion Berlin-Brandenburg international airport will handle up to 50 million passengers.
This is not due to happen until 2011, so until then I have written an insight into what you should expect when you walk through the doors of Berlin Schoenfield airport.
When you walk into the airport you will experience a light bright airport, the staff are friendly and the seating is comfortable. There is ample parking outside of the airport, with easy access to the airport building once you have parked your car. If you decide to hire a vehicle once you have reached the airport, then there are facilities to do this.

There are baby changing facilities in both terminals A and B. If you have children that need entertaining for a couple of hours during your wait at the airport, then there is a children’s playground, as well as toys and films. These children’s facilities are free of charge in Terminal A. There is a first aid station in Terminal C and a post office which is located on the ground floor of Terminal A.
If you need to eat or drink, then there is a array of shops offering hot and cold drinks, sweets, sandwiches and cakes. There is also a good range of bars, should you feel the need for something stronger.
If you are a business person looking for somewhere quiet to work, then you will find business facilities in Hugo-Junkers-Lounge which is located in Terminal B on the second floor. The services include conference rooms, which can be booked in advance for a reasonable fee, fax, internet and photocopying facilities.
The airport also has the added advantage of easy accessibility to disabled facilities, and they have specially adapted toilets and telephones. There are also TDD telephones for people who have trouble with their hearing.
Schönefeld is surrounded by airport hotels in Berlin. All of the hotels are first rate and for anyone wanting an overnight stay are well recommended. After my trip to Adlershof I had to find an airport hotel Berlin when my flight was cancelled due to bad weather, and I had to wait until the following morning until Schönefeld airport could reschedule the flight. I found a hotel just outside the airport with relative ease that had vacancies.
As Berlin is the top travel destination in Germany it is well worth a visit to Schönefeld airport, just for the experience.
